Members of the U.S. Navy Ceremonial Guard place flags at Arlington National Cemetery.

This week I had the honor to photograph the “Flags In” ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia. More than 1,000 service men and women take part in this 62 year old tradition that was established by the 3rd U.S. Infantry; The Old Guard. Flags are placed at every gravestone in the cemetery, totaling 260,000 flags. It was truly a humbling experience and I encourage you to pay your respects to all of the service men and women this Memorial Day weekend.

National Cherry Blossom Festival

Young Cherry Trees on the Tidal Basin

It’s cherry blossom time again in the Nation’s Capitol! There’s something about those pretty little white flowers that brings everyone and their neighbor (and brother, and sister, and mother, and father and friend…you get the picture) out to DC. This morning was no exception. I haven’t seen that many people on the National Mall since the Inauguration of Obama. It was fun. Everyone had a camera which made for good “photographer” watching. You know, the “photographer crouch” and all. Fun. Anyway, these are a few of my favorites from the day….

And for those of you who have never seen the cherry blossoms, here are a few in color. Enjoy!

April 13, 2010  ASMPDC Presents: Sounds Good! NPR’s Approach to Collecting Audio

Join us for a night all about audio! Have you been thinking about starting a multimedia project but keep getting hung up on the audio aspect? Have you already shot a project but are unhappy with the quality of your audio files?

Andrea Hsu and Coburn Dukehart, both from National Public Radio, will go over all aspects of capturing audio: from which microphones to use and when, to techniques of collecting sound in the field. They will also present some of their projects for a little dash of inspiration! So put that camera away for the night and join us as we learn audio from the best in the business.

Register early – Seating is Limited!

My childhood cat, Fred.

After attending the dpBestFlow ASMP seminar with Peter Krogh and Richard Anderson last week, I decided to take another look through my archive. One of the many challenges for photographers in the digital age is organizing and maintaining their archive. This really goes for everyone with a camera. I would encourage anyone who cherishes their photographs to check out the website for dpBestFlow. ASMP (American Society of Media Photographers) and the Library of Congress have put together a book and a website that delves deep into archivng images. It’s an amazing amount of information to go through, but you’ll be glad you did when your hard drive crashes and all is “lost.”

Take this image of my cat. Say 10-15 years from now when I’m reminiscing about my past pets, I find out all the images I had of them are corrupt, or I simply can’t remember which hard drive/computer/iPhone/folder I had them on? That’s where good practices in archiving come into play. Using keywords embedded in the images make finding images a breeze. For this image, I just had to search the following keywords in my image catalog: Cat; Fred. And there he was. Cool, huh? (Mom and Dad, are you listening???)
